You probably already saw the clip of the Japanese baseball video game that circulated on social media last week. While I understand it was only a few seconds of curated gameplay, there was no doubt that what we saw was a significant leap from the graphics we have in MLB the Show.
I mention this today because of the latest glitch from San Diego Studios, which has become a stream of glitches. Last week, it was miniature players with large heads and others with distorted faces, while this week, it is the unlinking and potential account resets. This comes in addition to the two-way player glitch, random freezes and disconnects, and inconsistent online gameplay.
When the game goes wrong, I usually give San Diego Studios the benefit of the doubt. As coding experts online have said, even a small change to the game’s code can have a cascading effect that introduces new bugs. At the same time, I expect a major video game studio with an official license for the highest level of baseball in the world not continually to make these types of mistakes.
I’ve played baseball video games my entire life, dating back to old-school RBI baseball on the Nintendo. I religiously play MLB the Show because it is the best baseball game available. However, I’m starting to run out of patience with the product.
Problems with the game will happen, but we continue to see major breakdowns regularly. This is not OK. MLB the Show is not a cheap game. Many of us devote lots of time and effort to playing it. For some, including myself, it provides an enjoyable respite from the stress of everyday life.
All I want is a nice-looking game that works without fail. Is that too much to ask?
Inside the Mind of a Top Player
I liked this video from CBrev, in which he provides pitch-by-pitch insight into a Ranked Seasons game. No yelling. No overreacting. Just solid analysis about scouting an opponent.
MLB the Show Cards Brought to Life
I came across Ho-Ran's great work on Twitter the other day. He sells real versions of MLB the Show cards through his Etsy page. I will soon buy myself that GOAT-’d Andrew McCutchen from two years ago. (Just to note, I don’t receive anything from this link—I just thought these were cool and wanted to pass them along.)
