National League Investment Report
Check out what National League players are worth holding on to.
Last week, I touched on investment opportunities in the American League. Today, I’ll take a look at players in the National League. As a reminder, players I’m considering are guys I’ve already pulled the trigger on or am close to doing so. The not yet guys are players that I like but want to give them a little more time.
NL East
Considering
Mets, B. Nimmo, J. McNeil: Both are right at QS value and are low-risk investments. Especially at 80 overall, if they hit 83 or 84, you have tripled or quadrupled your stubs on the investment.
Phillies, B. Stott, J. Hoffman: Stott made me so many stubs last year, so I am once again all in on him this season and he’s at QS value. Hoffman had a GREAT spring training and is worth a hold.
Marlins, J. Luzardo, T. Scott, L. Arraez, J. Chisholm: The Marlins don’t have a single diamond, so there’s going to be one at some point. These are my three favorites for this season, and all are right at QS value. With Chisholm being the cover athlete last year, I think he’ll be watched closely by SDS.
Not Yet
Mets, K. Senga: Senga got injured, but I would keep him on your radar for an investment opportunity later this season.
Nationals, CJ Abrams, J. Meneses: I like these players, but need to see how their season starts before diving into them.
Marlins, E. Perez: Perez is an intriguing investment option. However, Marlins do have quite a few golds, so I am going to wait a start to determine if I want to invest in him.
Phillies, A. Bohm: If Bohm can get hot against righties, he’ll be a great investment opportunity.
NL Central
Considering
Cubs, C. Morel: Morel is one of those younger prospects that is expected to put it all together this season. He’s a little bit of a risk with 30 stubs over QS value, but I think it might be worth it.
Pirates, J. Suwinski, K. Hayes: Suwinski crushed it during spring training and is another one of intriguing bronze to gold candidates. Hayes has diamond defense, and if he can grab a little power at the plate, he could take off to a diamond.
Not Yet
Cubs, N. Hoerner, D. Swanson, J. Steele: Steele is too pricey for me, so I’m going to wait and see how his season goes. Hoerner and Swanson need to start the season hot before I really take a look into them.
Cardinals, L. Nootbar: Had a fairly strong 2023 campaign and is starting this year off as a gold. He’s at QS value right now, however, has two fractured ribs that we need to see how he does once he comes back from that.
Reds, E. Cruz, H. Greene: Cruz is selling as an 82, and I just can’t bring myself to buy him. I would watch Greene, and I think as collections get finished up, his price will come down to be able to snag.
Brewers, W. Contreras, W. Adames: I want to see how the first few weeks of the season go for them. You could probably invest now with them both being at QS. Adames is a little older, which technically SDS runs on a 3-year average, so it may be a little harder to upgrade.
Pirates, O. Cruz: I think he is tearing it up, but just too overpriced for me to risk it. He’s basically selling as an 81 overall as a 74 overall.
NL West
Considering
Dbacks, C. Walker, L. Gurriel Jr.: Both are right at QS, and I think extremely safe picks to see how the first month of the season goes.
Rockies, N. Jones, R. McMahon: Nolan Jones finished as a diamond in ‘23 and right at QS. Extremely interested in his season.
Dodgers, T. Hernandez: The only player at the moment on the Dodgers that I would invest in due to the pricing on most others.
Padres, H. Kim: Right at QS value and has diamond defense. He had a career year last season, and if he can continue to grow with 20+ HRs and keep the same average, you’re looking at another diamond on the Padres.
Not Yet
Dbacks, K. Marte, A. Thomas: Marte costs too much right now to invest in, but is definitely someone to watch. Thomas is another interesting long-term investment to go from bronze to gold.
Rockies, B. Rodgers: Going to be keeping my eye on Rodgers to see if he can regain his 2021 form. If he does, it should be a pretty easy bronze to gold investment opportunity.
Dodgers, J. Outman, B. Miller: Both are young, but cost a little too much on the market. I would definitely keep my eye on them and see how their seasons progress.
Padres, J. Cronenworth: This is a make-or-break season for Cronenworth who burst on the scene in 2020 and 21. Probably my longest shot to go from bronze to gold on this list, but worth at least keeping an eye on.
Giants, L. Webb, C. Doval, T. Estrada: All are just a little bit too much over QS value for me to place them in the ‘considering’ tier. However, I will be watching their prices and season pretty closely.
