New Changes Coming to Diamond Dynasty
Power creep is back, Sets are kind of gone, and other key changes.
San Diego Studios outlined the changes to Diamond Dynasty for MLB the Show ’24 in a lengthy blog post this morning.
While there is certainly a lot to unpack, the biggest change comes in team building. Power creep (where better cards get released as the year progresses) is back although there is still a tinge of the set structure from last year returning.
Let’s look at some of the biggest changes.
No more 99s at launch. The best cards available will sit at 91 overall, allowing players to slowly build a team over time. This is huge as it provides constant motivation to grind and save for new cards to improve your team.
There will be 3-month “seasons”: So, this feels a lot like Sets from last year but there are some key differences. You will only be able to use Season 1 cards that season, although there will be up to four wild card slots (that you have to earn) to carry players over. Its essentially a new power creep each season, if I’m reading things correctly.
There are core cards that will be available every season. I’m assuming they will suck.
Every player will get a free set of cards at each season, including a Cornerstone card that will offer unique team-building boosts.
Battle Royale is now 10-0, which means I will now fall seven wins short of a perfect run instead of the usual nine. The lower BR threshold likely will make those cards cheaper in case you don’t want to deal with the grind.
There will be a crap ton of team affinity cards. There will be three 30-player team affinity releases in Season 1 alone. They will be easier to earn, so the grind may not be too painful.
I’m holding off judgment until the game launches. At first glance, these changes look like a positive. If nothing else, they are different. Last year was the worst when it came to content as the game was all but dead after June. Hopefully, we get an increase in new legends and stadiums as well.
The online reaction has been largely positive with a lot of comments offering some version of “I have no idea how this will work but at least it’s a change.”

Who Is the Mystery Man?
This is disappointing. It should be Josh Gibson.
