RIP: CAP
It looks like Diamond Dynasty players will not give up home runs to Riley Reid after all.
Wow.
So, a lot of news yesterday in Showland with the Ratings Reveal and the Feature Premiere. I’m not going to recap that because I don’t want to write all that and you probably don’t want to read it. If you are just checking in and don’t know what’s going on just understand THAT A LOT OF THINGS HAPPENED YESTERDAY.
Don’t worry. We’ll get into a lot of that stuff in due time, especially looking at the ratings from an investment standpoint (quick shoutout to @showinvestments who will soon write some articles here) and what parts of gameplay I plan to tackle once the game finally comes out.
Instead, I want to briefly discuss the end of the create-a-player, or CAP, in Diamond Dynasty. As I’m sure you are well aware, you could create any player you wanted whether it be a 4-10, 300-pound switch-hitting catcher or a left-handed submarine pitcher with a 102-mile-per-hour fastball and 64-mile-per-hour change-up.
This year – for the first time I remember – gamers will not be able to create a player in Diamond Dynasty. Of course, you can create a player in Road to the Show, but that player cannot carry over. While I never used a CAP in Diamond Dynasty, failing to do so was definitely to my detriment.
CAPS were overpowered the first few weeks after a game’s release. With a limited player pool, Diamond Dynasty players could fill a troublesome hole in their lineup, especially at thin positions like shortstop and catcher. The CAPS were usually great – 99 overalls with power and speed. It was the best idea to use one at least until better players arrived.
Coincidentally (and I mean, not at all), the end of CAPs in Diamond Dynasty comes the same year that you can play as a female in Road to the Show. The early speculation – and thus, most of the jokes – was that female CAPS could be created for Diamond Dynasty. That led to lines like this one on the MLB the Show discord:
No Lana Rhoades, Riley Reid in my DD games
And this one:
In separating the two modes, MLB the Show put an end to that before the Internet became filled with clips of 500-foot bombs hit off female pitchers or Neanderthal-brained players throwing at a female CAP every time she was at the plate.
Perhaps the only real thing I’ll miss about CAPs in the names in likenesses. I’ve played characterizations of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Donald Trump. I’ve played some of the ugliest humans possible with gigantic heads and little bodies. I’ve played WAY TOO MANY racist or largely insensitive names. I’ve played against lots of white dudes with beards.
RIP CAP.
